As he approaches his sixth anniversary as manager, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his continued role with the club is fundamentally dependent to achieving success.

Reflecting on: Six Years in Charge

Arteta assumed control on 20 December 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup triumph a short time later. But, that first major trophy remains his sole significant piece of silverware following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” he stated in response to a query about staying beyond 2027. “However, it is about today. And a lot of things must occur in the near future as well to earn the right.”

He will mark the six-year milestone with a game facing Everton, the identical team Arsenal played immediately following his role was made public.

Present Challenges

With chasing Manchester City taking on West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal could be displaced first place in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This potential shift despite Arteta managing a squad that has suffered in excess of one hundred injury setbacks from the beginning of last season.

The manager is under a contract with 18 months remaining on the extension he agreed to in 2024, yet understands fully that success is required sooner rather than later.

Earning the Right

Arteta elaborated, highlighting the constant necessity to validate his position. “I think a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you talk here, how you step into the dressing room, the message you convey.”

He added, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the club's ownership, while singling out the players' commitment as most crucial. “In the final analysis, the most important ones are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, willingness to improve and give their all to the team.”

Injury Concerns

Arsenal approaches the Everton match dealing with yet another injury. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a strain that is expected to see him miss action for a few weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Even with the availability issues and the high-stakes environment, Arteta is confident the club's “priorities and messaging” are vastly different from when he first arrived.

The manager referenced the team's performances as evidence of progress. “Examine the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the standard we operate at.”

Arteta concluded, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And we want to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
