Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a release.

Officers state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued liquid.

The liquid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they added.

Officers then located many other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Police state initial examinations indicate the fluid was likely human blood.

"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; officials are presently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the incident," they stated.

Local authorities said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for information.

A senior representative said the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be addressed rapidly.

"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
