🔗 Share this article From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Response to Epstein File Release is Divided. Conservative reactions to the partial release of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner. Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction procedure. Concerns Prompted by Redactions While the former president's identity and image appear in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks raise serious concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded increased transparency. “The public are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene. In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he added. Some Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Disclosure However, some conservative commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions. The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities blacked out. But a few do not, featuring prominent figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to go on the offensive. “It’s quite rich how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer. “New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.” Clinton Campaign Releases Statement Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those documents for months only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement. “This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded. Broader Conservative Comment Remains Muted However, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a law mandating the files' release. The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were given physical binders of files that contained little new information.
