Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's decision was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that he be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. The current president was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
